Robotics for Girls

2011 Robotics Competition Start

The Zonta Club of Santa Clarita has joined forces with the Boys and Girls Club to offer a Summer Robotics Program for Girls.  This program is designed to foster interest and skills in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) fields. Girls, ages 9-14, will learn to design, program and control fully-functional Lego Mindstorm Robots.

The girls will use software to plan, test and modify sequences of instructions for a variety of life-like robotic behaviors. They learn to collect and analyze data from sensors, using data logging functionalities embedded in the software.  Activity packs are developed by The Boys and Girls Club of America and provide a series of real-life activities, covering topics within science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Zonta feels this program will increase girls' interest and education in the STEM fields. The secondary objective of this program is to increase girls' self esteem and competencies in the following areas: math, logic and problem solving.  In doing so, participants may desire to continue their education and find careers in the STEM fields.

Zonta is pleased to have participated, through our Community Grants program, in the year 2009-2011 introduction of the Robotics’ program for girls at the Newhall Boys and Girls Club.  To date we have had over 50 participants.
